My son and I were sitting on the porch the other day for our evening bible time together and just before we start into our passage in Acts, he looks with a sad face at some flowers in a vase that had started to whither.
I asked what was the matter.
"I accidentally pulled those from the big plant a few days ago," he said. "The other flowers (in the potted plant) are still big, but those ones (in the vase) are dying."
It just so happened that our passage for that night was Acts 2:42-47:
[42] And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. [43] And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. [44] And all who believed were together and had all things in common. [45] And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. [46] And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, [47] praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (ESV)
I saw the obvious word picture and thought it would be good for him and for all of us as believers.
If you see yourself as one of the flowers in the potted plant, you can see how being joined together with others of your kind and rooted in Christ is the most healthy place you can be (When the early church did this they were sustained and they grew).
However, if you or I as a Christian plucks our self out of that Christ-rooted fellowship, we may appear healthy and even beautiful for a time (three days in the case of the actual flower in the vase), but eventually, we find that we are not designed to sustain health or spiritual vitality apart from the body.
Who do you know who has been plucked from a regular fellowship and PARTNERSHIP in the Gospel through a local church? This week, begin praying for God to reconcile that relationship with the local family of believers and pray that He will use you as a means to that end.
I believe that membership in a local church is VITAL to the Christian walk. Even if they do not come to KBC, Help them to find somewhere to connect and invest.
